Job Description

Water and Wastewater Operator Job Duties & Abilities

  1. Adjusts, inspects and evaluates processes and equipment that control the operation and effectiveness of water and wastewater systems (WWT, WWC, WT, WD) in order to optimize performance, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize local and/or system wide adverse impacts while taking into consideration cost, equipment capabilities, environmental impacts and OH&S.

  2. Operates and monitors the performance of system process equipment and related appurtenances, including but not limited to valves, gates, pumps, compressors, engines, electric motors/generators, HVAC systems, chemical dosing equipment, etc.

  3. Makes process adjustments, operational decisions and addresses/responds to alarm conditions to ensure efficient, compliant and safe operation within established performance, regulatory and quality limits.

  4. Maintains records and documentation of all process and/or work area activities using either manual or computerized systems including but not limited to plant logbooks, computerized databases, etc.

  5. Accountable for the efficient operation, in compliance with applicable regulations, of all processes within the water and wastewater systems as well as for personal performance and promoting optimal team performance.

  6. Collects samples, perform routine laboratory tests, analysis and calculations, and records results.

  7. Interprets laboratory results (internal and external) and makes adjustments as necessary.

  8. Identifies changes in operational conditions and interprets information in order to implement corrective actions and/or troubleshoot process issues.

  9. Utilizes various tools to perform operational duties including but not limited to Process Control System (PCS), other SCADA systems, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and Work Management System (WMS).

  10. Performs preventative maintenance diagnostics, and routine preventative maintenance duties such as monitoring equipment for excessive vibration or high temperatures.

  11. Monitors and assesses equipment performance and maintains process operations by using CLAIR (clean, lubricate, adjust, inspect, repair).

Qualifications

Licensing Requirements:

  • Valid MECP Water / Wastewater operating certificate(s) and or licenses as per facility requirement(s)

  • Valid Class G Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent

  • Post-Secondary Education in an Environmental program would be an asset

  • Post-Secondary Education in a Technical Trade (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation) would be an asset

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations applicable to the operation of water and wastewater facilities.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant including knowledge of the Activated Sludge process, Digestion (Aerobic, Anaerobic), Disinfection and Nutrient Removal.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater collection system including knowledge of pumping stations, sanitary sewers and manholes.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant including knowledge of flocculation, tube settling clarifiers, dual media filtration and the use of coagulation, disinfection and pH adjustment chemicals.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices necessary in the operation and maintenance of a water distribution system including the operation of a water tower and booster stations, force-main swabbing and fire hydrant use and maintenance, water main flushing, and water sampling.

  • Ability to work with process control automation systems and interpret process information.

  • An ability to alter unit process operations manually or using computerized technology to meet varying conditions.

  • Knowledge of record keeping, sampling techniques and analytical procedures including the ability to interpret and make process adjustments.

  • General knowledge of basic mechanical/electrical theory and instrumentation.

  • Ability to, and knowledge of, occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary to work in water and wastewater facilities including but not limited to, chemical handling, confined space entry, lockout/tag-out and the use of personal protective equipment required to work safely.

  • Basic computer skills including ability to use basic word processing, email and spreadsheet software programs.

  • An ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

  • An ability to prepare reports and maintain neat and accurate records.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • An ability to work well in a team.

  • An interest in continuous learning.

  • An ability to continually grow skills; transferring new knowledge into practical abilities.

Work Environment:

Permanent position, on a full-time basis, where the working schedule is from Monday to Friday. Incumbent must be available to work weekends and statutory holidays when required, and be available to work a rotating on-call schedule.

Physical Demands:

  • 75% Walking, 15% Standing, 5% sitting, 5% driving

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 55 pounds (25 kgs)

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and enter confined spaces.

  • May be required to use ladders or stairs.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction

Possible Work Hazards:

  • May be exposed to possible operations hazards including but not limited to fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals, heavy machinery, high pressure, hot or cold work environment temperatures, slippery surfaces, water hazards and electrical equipment.
